Because studies and sketches are created quickly and with low stakes, they can contain a special dose of creative energy, and some can go on to become important works of art in their own right. But most of the time, they’re set aside and forgotten in favor of completing the larger work promised to a gallery or commission client. This exhibition aims to change that.

As most artists will tell you, their process of creating a finished piece is as important and gratifying as the finished artwork itself. And while one artist’s process is never identical to another’s, many incorporate stages of sketching and creating studies along the way to a final design for a larger work.

Western Gallery is digging the best studies out of artists’ studios all across the West, polishing them up and offering them as an accessible way to acquire exciting artwork this holiday season.
