More about Lone Beavertail

“This work is interesting to me because I found this Beavertail cactus on Whitney Portal Road on the side of a cliff. Mt Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48. It was a fairly high elevation at this point of the road when I found it. I’m typically finding these at low desert spots like Death Valley or Borrego Springs so to see it out of its usual range was interesting. I usually see it among desert agave, sand verbena and other desert plants but these were growing among the pine trees and manzanita. This plant seemed to be doing well in the gravely loose dirt on the side of a cliff and had a plethora of flowers. This Beavertail was the only one I saw on the whole trip.” – Shae Reardon
