Big Love for Big Bend

Alice Leese - Western Gallery

Alice Leese

Big Love for Big Bend is Alice Leese painting the country she works and walks.

A lifelong West Texan and working rancher, she knows Big Bend by muscle memory—its weather, distances, and the way light slips off volcanic forms at day’s edge. That insider’s view keeps the romance honest. You feel the heat, the silence, the scale, and why people keep going back.

Leese moves between plein air studies and the studio, and you can see the motion in the paint. Strokes track wind across grass, horizons tilt just enough to suggest a shifting stance, and edges vibrate where heat meets shadow. There’s a clear post-Impressionist backbone here: broken color, saturated yet disciplined palettes, simplified shapes, and rhythmic mark-making that establishes real presence. The result is work that reads fast from across the room, then resolves into decisions—one brushload at a time—up close.

This exhibition is about fidelity to a lived place. Leese translates the region’s vastness into something you can carry: a felt sense of time, distance, and care. It's a guided wander through West Texas light—direct, unsentimental, and full of movement. Step into the view and feel how Alice’s love for Big Bend runs deep.

Alice Leese - Artist Statement

Statement

“My work is about place, specific locations. The work is regional to the southwest United States, particularly the YT Ranch where I live and work. Coming from a background of ranching makes conservation and stewardship of place a priority. Impressions on the landscape made by natural phenomenon and man are recorded in paint creating a record of the current environment as seen through the eyes of an artist. The land, occupants and uses for land change over regions and my landscape paintings are a record of the effects of weather conditions, droughts, rain and events like grass fires.” – Alice Leese
